Does Marijuana Kill Brain Cells

Our Brain is seriously affected by smoking Marijuana but the real question is does marijuana kill brain cells? First let’s see what the active chemical inside this drug is, and who it affects our brain.

Marijuana contains an ingredient called THC which is the main active ingredient that affects the nerve cells that are present in different parts of our brain. The normal functions of our body or mind gets altered when this THC binds to nerve receptors in our brain. As THC binds to the nerve receptors it brings about chemical changes in our brain which is why we feel high and gets clumsy after smoking weed.

How does weed affect our brain cells?

When you ask the question does Marijuana kill brain cells then definitely the answer will be not directly, but weed can cause imbalance in in our work, coordination, posture, and in the time in which we can react to any kind of action. Moreover it leads to memory loss as the processing of the information in the hippocampus of our brain changes and it does not let you concentrate and focus on your work. Researchers are working on this current topic that: how much weed and memory loss is interconnected.

How does Marijuana effect your life?

Weed can refrain you from achieving all those career opportunities in which you could succeed, it can hamper your cognitive abilities, reduce your physical strength and abilities. After taking weed you will often feel clumsy and won’t be able to socialise with your relatives and even friends due to which your mental health will also degrade.

The scientists till now do not know about the total affects which weed can cause to the mind and brain in the processing of the memory, whether the effects are permanent or temporary. But it has been found that the effect of THC on our brain will go down after acute exposure and your brain will restore all the normal conditions if you do not smoke weed for almost 4-8 weeks.

Loss of Ability for Memory Retention

When you ask the question does weed kill brain cells then we must know that as we start growing old, our brain‘s hippocampus starts losing some neurons or the neuron die due to which our ability to retain information in our brain for a long time, and we find it difficult to learn any new thing. This is a part of the normal process of aging but when a person gets addicted to marijuana this process of aging of the brain speeds up, as well as affect your body in a number of ways.

What Does Research Suggest?

Through an experiment it was confirmed that when a rat was exposed to weed for 8 months daily then its life span got reduced by more than 30% which is a big amount. Animals twice the age of that rat had more number of nerve cells than what that rat had after the experiment. So, does weed kill brain cells? No not directly but it hampers our nervous system.

Another experiment was conducted on rodents at the University of Western Ontario in Canada by Steven Laviolette in which some rodents CB1 receptor-associated with fear and emotion in their brain was blocked, and some were treated with the active ingredient THC in the marijuana to enhance the CB1 receptor. Now on delivering electric shocks and a scent in their cage which they use to fear, it was seen that the CB1 blocked rats did not show any kind of reaction and they were happy as before, but the once treated with THC, on receiving even the mildest of the shock and sent, they froze with fear.

Thus it was concluded that weed effects the receptors in the brain that makes us paranoiac and we can sense things even with the mildest of its effects.

Dr Paola Dazzan who is the Reader at King’s College London, in the Neurobiology of Psychosis from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience department, stated that the white matter fibres in the addict’s brain is affected irrespective of the fact whether the person has Psychosis or not when he/she uses weed frequently. A study was done on 56 patients of Psychosis in which the white matter of their brain was examined with the help of a special MRI technique called Diffusion Tensor Imaging at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Does Marijuana Kill Brain Cells

The results showed that if the person used high potency cannabis frequently then he/she would develop a higher chance of a marker of damage in the white matter fibres of the brain known as Mean-Diffusivity.

So, does marijuana kill brain cells? Yes, we can conclude from these studies that weed can damage our white matter to a large extent and even cause Psychosis. Moreover, it makes a person paranoid to the least fearful things around them, and can affect thier daily life in all kind of negative ways.
